Our History

1961
A small group of people centered on Manordale began discussions with Ottawa United Church Presbytery to establish a United Church in the area.
Manordale was built on the Knox Farm and that name had great religious significance, hence the church was called Knox United Church.

1962
March - Petition to the Ottawa Presbytery that a Congregation be organized and a church be established in the Manordale-Merivale area.
September - The first service of the new Knox congregation held on the lawn of Manordale Public School (75 adults and 120 children).

1963
January 27 - The congregation was officially constituted by the chairman of the United Church Ottawa Presbytery. A roll of charter members was established.
March 17 - The first Congregational Meeting of Knox United Church.

1967
Establish Building Feasibility Committee: to investigate the feasibility of erecting a Church-Hall complex on property on Knoxdale Road obtained by the Ottawa Presbytery. The Presbytery had been holding a 3.1-acre site in anticipation of the need for a church in the area.

1968
The building committee unanimously directed to focus on building a multi –purpose hall for both church and community programs. Decided to build a prefabricated building.

1969
Chose a PAN-ABODE Building. It was a pre-constructed cedar log building manufactured in Vancouver, BC. Advantages were the lower cost and the large amount of work that could be done by volunteers.

1970
Secured written commitment from the Presbytery Church Extension Committee to build on the Knoxdale land at no cost, subject to building programme approval by Presbytery. Presbytery provides a grant of $20,000 to assist in construction.

1971
Sunday worship moves from Manordale public school to Greenbank public school.

1972
Fund raising and developing building and property requirements.
September - Building Committee reports to the Congregation. Seeks input and approval of building plans and estimates.
December - Congregation approves building plans.

1973
PAN ABODE building ordered.
Late September - Prefabricated log building arrives at Henry Hansen’s in Bells Corners.
Church volunteers help on cold wet day unload the box car for transport to the building site.
September-December - Cement foundation poured.
Prefabricated log building was erected by professional builders in just 10 days. Erect the log walls, laminated 40-foot Glulam arches and roof.
A small volunteer army of congregational drywallers, electricians’ plumbers, carpenters, cabinet makers, and others begin to do most of the interior work, roofing and exterior landscaping.

1974
June - Knox Congregation move into the Church on Gibbard (formerly Knoxdale).
September 29 - Official dedication of the Church.
November - Final cost of the Church was $95,000.
December - The Christmas pageant tradition begins.

1975
Cornerstone was placed as part of the larger celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the United Church of Canada.

1979
Knox grows to 450 members and 311 households.

1982
Mortgage paid off/ceremonial burning on the front lawn.

1983
The Congregation agrees to proceed with the construction of an addition to the church.

1984
Construction of the addition begins and finished by late fall.


1992
Executive of Presbytery gave consent to the sale of the Manse at 45 Pritchard drive, Nepean and was sold as of July that year.

1997
Stained glass window recognizing Rev. Dr. Donald Boyd’s 25 years as minister at Knox.

2010
Stained glass window in memory of Nancy Clare installed in the sanctuary

2013
January 23 - 50th Anniversary Banquet at Algonquin College

March - Light boxes installed on North interior wall.

2014
Time capsule filled and mounted in Gibbard Ave. stairwell.

2015
Solar panels installed on roof of administration building.

2016
Summer
- In conjunction with the City of Ottawa (funding) a community garden was established providing 30 garden beds. Each year 1 -2 beds are planted for FAMSAC.
July - Backlit cross with lettering installed on exterior of the building on the parking lot side.

2019
Fenwick Memorial stained-glass window installed.

2020
January Electronic digital message board installed on Knox’s curbside sign.
Lower light panel added to the exterior curbside sign.
Knox closed for in person services due to COVID.

2022
In church Services resumed after 2 year shutdown due to COVID.

2023
Stone Turtle and interpretative sign installed as a 3-D Land Acknowledgement.

2025
4 more garden beds added to community garden, accessible door switch added to parking lot door and heat pumps units added.
